A Whole New Jupiter: First Science Results from NASA's Juno Mission
Juno launched on August 5, 2011, and entered Jupiter's orbit on July 4, 2016. Findings from its first data-gathering flyby, which flew within about 2,600 miles (4,200 kilometers) of Jupiter's rotating cloud tops on August 27, were published this week in two papers in the journal Science and 44 papers in Geophysical Research Letters. The image showed Jupiter's poles enveloped in tightly clustered, Earth-sized rotating storms that rubbed against each other. "We were puzzled about how these storms formed, how stable their configuration was, and why Jupiter's north pole didn't look like the south pole," Bolton said. "We wondered whether this was a dynamic system, and were we just seeing one phase, and over the next year, we'd see it dissipate, or was this a stable configuration and these storms were spiraling into each other?" Another surprise came from Juno's Microwave Radiometer (MWR), which samples thermal microwave radiation from Jupiter's atmosphere, from the tops of the ammonia clouds to deep within the atmosphere. The MWR data showed that Jupiter's iconic belts and zones remain mysterious, with belts near the equator penetrating all the way down, while belts and zones at other latitudes appear to be evolving into different structures.
