The Legend of Lutung Kasarung
Once upon a time, there lived a king named Prabu Tapa Agung. Prabu Tapa Agung was an old king. He had two daughters, Purbararang and Purbasari. Prabu Tapa Agung planned to retire as king. He wanted Purbasari to succeed him as leader of the kingdom. Hearing this, Purbararang became angry.
"You can't ask her to be queen. I'm older than her. It should be me, not her. That's impossible, Father!" said Purbararang.
"No, Purbararang, no. It's because I love you, and I chose Purbasari as queen because she's the only one worthy of being queen. Besides, she's your sister," replied the king.
"No, Father. It hurts me."
Purbararang then hatched an evil plan with her fiancé, Indrajaya. They went to a witch together and asked her to cast a spell on Purbasari. Then they gave her a bowl of drink and made Purbasari drink it. Afterward, Purbasari's skin became worse. There were black spots all over her body.
"Oh my God, what's happening to my skin, my body, my face, and my breath!" said Purbasari.
"Hahaha... You're not as beautiful as me. You can't be queen. Instead, you should leave this palace and live in the forest," said Purbararang.
Purbasari was very sad. Now she had to live in the forest. Every day she spent her time playing with several animals there. There was a monkey who always tried to cheer her up. Not just any ordinary monkey, he had magical powers. And he could also speak to humans. The monkey's name was Lutung Kasarung. He was actually a god. His name was Sanghyang Gurumina. Lutung Kasarung planned to help Purbasari. He created a small lake and asked her to bathe there.
"My daughter, I will help you return to the palace," said Lutung Kasarung.
"Thank you, Lutung. You are very kind. But how can I return to the palace? My body smells and is disgusting," replied Purbasari.
“Never give up, Princess. You just need to bathe in the small lake I made.”
Miraculously, her problematic skin healed. Now her skin was beautiful again.
After that, she asked Lutung Kasarung to accompany her back to the palace. Purbararang was shocked. She knew she had to come up with another bad idea. Then she said, “Whoever has longer hair will be queen.”
The king then measured his daughter’s hair. Purbasari had longer hair than Purbararang. But Purbararang didn’t give up.
“A queen must have a handsome husband. If my fiancé is more handsome than yours, then I will be queen,” Purbararang said.
Purbasari was sad. She knew Purbararang’s fiancé, Indrajaya, was handsome. And she didn’t have a fiancé yet.
“This is my fiancé, Indrajaya. Where is your fiancé?” Purbararang asked.
Lutung Kasarung stepped forward. Purbararang burst out laughing. “Your fiancé is a monkey, ha ha ha.”
“Lutung, what should I do?” Purbasari asked.
“Don’t worry, my princess. I have a great idea.”
Suddenly, Lutung Kasarung transformed into a very handsome man. He was even more handsome than Indrajaya. Purbararang and Indrajaya were very surprised. Purbasari then became queen. He forgave Purbararang and her fiancé and allowed them to live in the palace.
