Once upon a time, there lived a bear and a rabbit, neighbors. The rabbit was a good shooter, and the bear, being very clumsy, couldn't use a bow and arrow well. The bear was very unkind to the rabbit. Every morning, the bear would call the rabbit and ask him to take his bow and arrows and come with the bear to the other side of the hill. Tornado Devastates Semarang

Residents assess the damage after a tornado destroyed 15 houses in the Tembalang district, Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday afternoon.

Three people were injured, and at least five houses in the Sendangguwo and Tandang neighborhoods were destroyed, while many others were severely damaged after the tornado ripped off their roofs. Thoirin, also known as Jayeng, 40, a resident whose house was leveled in the SendangAsri housing complex, said the wind struck around 4 p.m.

“I saw this black wind coming and it became like a funnel. It suddenly approached and hit my house,” he said.

Thoirin’s wife, two children, and mother-in-law were in the kitchen when the tornado, known locally as “Ulur-ulur,” passed through their house, destroying the living room and bedroom.

“It was as if the wind had lifted my house,” Thoirin said.

The disaster also destroyed the walls of four neighboring houses.

Many other houses in the area lost their roofs, and residents and neighbors began rebuilding on Sunday.

Tembalang District Head Dayat said the tornado also damaged a small mosque and downed power lines and about 50 trees. His office was still compiling damage data, he said.

Villagers said the tornado was the worst to hit the district in their memory.

Semarang Mayor Sukawi Sutarip and his wife, Sinto Sukawi, visited the scene on Sunday, accompanied by senior officials.

“We will immediately provide assistance to the victims,” said the mayor’s spokesperson, Achyani.
